The half spider guard is mostly a transitional position as there aren't any direct sweeps from the half spider position itself. We can use the half spider guard to transition from spider guard into x guard, curu curu guard, or a single leg to finish with a sweep. The position has become more popular in the modern competition scene with people like Leandro Lo using it effectively in competitions against the best in the world. Xande teaches the classic spider guard sweep off of your opponent's pass. In this sweep, we use our opponent's pass attempt against them by rotating our hips to generate enough force to sweep our opponent as if they were attached to the end of a pendulum. Be sure to post your other foot on the ground to be able to generate the extra force to ensure a successful sweep.

In this lesson, he demonstrates how he uses the lasso control to manipulate his opponent and sweep them with the "spider guard classic sweep with lasso control" or simply "lasso control classic sweep". This sweep is very similar to, and a variation of, the "Classic Spider Guard Sweep" or " JJU 19-03 Sweep Off a Pass" as seen in the JJU book.
