His other leg is tight under the thigh, his hips are pushing up on the elbow and his arm is under the armpit on the far side. He grips his opponent's top leg at the knee, and makes the space to back step his leg out of the half guard. Now he can change his base to establish side control.

Fredson Alves shows a combination of passes he uses to pass the knee shield guard. First he grips both lapels in one hand, and grabs under the bottom knee with the other. In the first pass, he stands up and walks his opponent's legs to the other side, and smashing them before he cuts his knee across the shin to pass. However, if his opponent reacts by escaping his hips while he is trying to smash the legs, Fredson simply switches to the X-pass to pass the guard.

He was able to step his leg over the head, and then pulled his elbow tight to his body to keep his opponent's arm trapped. His opponent turned in to him, and Xande was able to create the space to switch his grip to a kimura trap. His opponent tried to defend with different grips, but Xande was able to use his leverage to break the grip and finish the kimura.

Muhamed was playing a half guard with Xande's arm lassoed, so Xande's first step is to use that arm to grab the pants on the bottom leg, and put the crown of his head on the shoulder. Now he uses his free hand to grab either the collar or sleeve, before cutting his knee out of the half guard. From here, he applies pressure with his head, and establishes a knee on belly, where he is able to break the lasso grip.
