Again from inside his opponent's knee shield guard, Gustavo is controlling the position with his grip at the hip and his hand pressing down the bottom shoulder. But now he switches so his other hand presses the other shoulder, and he makes a grip on the bottom knee. He rises to his feet and pulls his opponent square to him, and then cuts his knee across the shin to pass to side control.

Here Gustavo shows a drill to practice setting up a pass from the knee shield half guard. While on his knees, Gustavo gets on his toes and makes a grip on the pants at the hip, and presses down on the far shoulder. Putting his weight on his opponent, he raises his knees and walks to the other side, smashing his opponent's legs. Now he lets his opponent reset the knee shield on the opposite side and goes again. This drill will help set up the next pass.

Saulo switches his hips and drops down low, but after he pulls his knee free, his opponent is pushing at his head and not allowing him to settle in. Now he can underhook his opponent's arm or "chicken wing" and turn his hips away to knee cut pass. In many cases, he will not even try to pass, but just use his collar grip to finish the choke.

Here Saulo emphasizes the importance of getting very low when he switches his hips. By getting low, his opponent does not have the leverage to push him away, and it's easy for Saulo to pull the leg to him and then stretch it away.

From inside his opponent's half guard, Saulo makes a thumb in cross collar grip and switches his hips to face his opponent. When he switches, he puts his head heavy on the chest and drops his hips low, placing his outside knee underneath his opponent's thigh. Now he uses his outside shin to block the bottom knee and straightens his arm to open the guard and get his pass. He also has the option to choke, depending on how his opponent reacts.

Rafael works for the same pass shown in the previous technique, but this time his opponent brings his inverted De La Riva hook to the the other side. Now when Rafael frees his trapped leg, he puts his knee forward to pin his opponent's thigh, most likely ending up in 3/4 mount position. Since he already has his cross collar grip, he can attack the neck and most likely his opponent will try to bridge to escape. This allows Rafael to settle in to full mount and work to submit.

While working from his headquarters position, Rafael's opponent turns and switches to an inverted De La Riva guard. With one hand already gripping the pants, Rafael turns his shoulder and toes to the knee and reaches across with his other hand to make the thumb in cross collar grip. He drops his outside knee to the mat for a solid base and pins the head using his forearm. Now he just stretches his leg until he breaks his opponent's grip and can pass to the side.

Rafael touches on a few points of his passing game, including how he can transition between the knee cut and side smash passes. While working the knee cut, if his opponent tries to turn into the knee the opposite direction Rafael is facing, this is the time to go with his momentum and settle in on the side smash. From here he can go back the knee cut if necessary, and keep going back and forth until something opens up for him.

When using the cross knee or knee cut pass, the most important thing for Rafael is that he can use his elbow to put pressure on his opponent’s neck and face. With the thumb in collar grip, he has a hard time utilizing his elbow pressure, so he prefers to go four fingers in. However, in almost every other situation, Rafael will use the thumb in grip. This does not necessarily mean either is right or wrong, but this is what works for him.

Again from three quarter mount, Victor slides his body down and keeps his weight on his opponent's leg and looks to get the cross face. But this time his opponent is defending by staying on his side and blocking Victor's arm. Now Victor uses his stomach to trap the arm, and reaches around behind the head and grabs the wrist. Next he brings his free leg up so his knee is behind the shoulders, and he feeds his other hand through, connecting his Kimura grip. From here he just opens his knee and sits back, pulling his opponent on top of him before rolling to the other side, where he can throw on his second hook and establish back control.

Victor is on top of his opponent, almost in the mount position, except his foot is trapped, leaving him in three quarter mount. First he slides his free leg down, and sits his weight on his opponent's thighs. Now he puts his arm behind the head, grabbing the back of the gi, and connects his shoulder to the chest. Using his foot to push off the mat, Victor drives his weight toward the side of his free leg, and puts heavy pressure on his opponent and drives forward until he can free his foot and establish the mount.
