Covering some principles of the hip escape, when turning to his side, Saulo keeps his hands to his chest rather than pushing them away. He also keeps his legs slightly bent instead of straightening them out all the way. Another point he makes is that when moving to the shrimp position, it should be one fluid movement. And if he chooses to turn belly down, he takes small steps and keeps his belly off the mat so he doesn't get caught laying flat on his stomach.Add to Favorites 824 Remove From Favorites 2527 days ago
In another variation of the back roll, Saulo looks over his shoulder as he rolls back on to it, and plants both his feet behind him at an angle. Keeping his foot opposite of the shoulder he's on planted, he slides his other leg underneath as he pivots on his shoulder. He rotates all the way through until he is facing his original direction with both legs in front of him in a seated position.Add to Favorites 648 Remove From Favorites 2528 days ago
For the front roll, Saulo begins by getting in his headquarters stance, which is a wide base squat with his elbows inside his legs. He leans forward to post his hand on the mat and then his elbow. Next he makes sure to look back as his shoulder hits the mat and continues his momentum to roll forward over his shoulder. If he wants to stop, he can slap his arm and leg on the mat like a break fall. He also has the option to continue the roll back to his feet.Add to Favorites 606 Remove From Favorites 2529 days ago
For the back roll, you can start either from a standing squat position or already seated on the ground. From the ground, you can grab your collars and roll back, picking a side and turning your head toward that shoulder as you roll over it. From standing, you first do a back fall, and then use the momentum to complete the roll, again looking toward the shoulder you are rolling over.Add to Favorites 584 Remove From Favorites 2531 days ago
Now Saulo covers the back fall, emphasizing how he keeps the arch in his body and doesn't let his legs come back over his head. Rather, he extends them a little and keeps them in front to protect himself from attack. Another key detail when doing a technical standup after a back fall, is to keep your line of vision forward rather than looking down at the ground.Add to Favorites 515 Remove From Favorites 2532 days ago
Now covering the fundamental side fall, when Saulo swings his falling leg to the inside, his standing leg squats a little to lower himself toward the ground. He also keeps his back arched forward a bit to help him roll when he hits the ground, and he can use the rolling momentum to stand right back up to protect himself if need be.Add to Favorites 735 Remove From Favorites 2533 days ago
When do the hip switch movement, Saulo keeps his hips facing forward in his neutral position, and as he advances forward he is switching his hips to both sides, one after the other. He stays light on his feet, but not jumping off the mat. He also keeps his elbows in and his hands resting, and as always, much focus is on his breath matching his movement.Add to Favorites 745 Remove From Favorites 2534 days ago
First when Saulo is stepping back to create distance from his opponent, he is looking where he is going, but keeping his head neutral and just shifting his eyes. Again, it's very important that he has a comfortable base with his knees bent and his posture up.Add to Favorites 587 Remove From Favorites 2535 days ago
Saulo emphasizes the importance of using a full range of motion when running with high knees and high heels, as your body will learn its habits during training. It's also important to keep your elbows in like you would while standup fighting in a match.Add to Favorites 648 Remove From Favorites 2536 days ago
Starting off the Ribeiro fundamental floor drills, Saulo shows the basics of side stepping. First he establishes a comfortable base, staying low and wide. Next he wants to focus on keeping his shoulders loose, his feet light and mobile. Another key point is to keep control of his breath and let it work with his movement so he doesn't get tired.Add to Favorites 2496 Remove From Favorites 3619 days ago
