From side control, Masakazu places his elbow on the mat, in the far armpit of his opponent, and turns his hips up to the ceiling. He slides his hips up the body, bringing his opponent's arm up as well. His far arm comes underneath the head, and he grabs his biceps at his opponent's armpit, trapping the arm inside with the neck. He makes a grip like a rear naked choke, and squeezes to finish the choke.

On to one Xande's favorite submissions, he has a strong side control in the landmark 2 position with his hips facing his opponent's head. His arm reaches across the neck for a collar grip and he transitions to a neutral side control for better leverage. His free hand reaches underneath the near arm and now he can drop his elbow to finish the Saulo choke.Add to Favorites 551 Remove From Favorites 1317 days ago
Now Xande goes over exactly how he breaks his opponent's frame on his hip from side control. First he walks the arm up high near the head, and by switching his hips he can use just his legs to control and trap the arm, allowing him to then control the legs and advance to mount.Add to Favorites 540 Remove From Favorites 1318 days ago
If Xande's opponent is able to sneak his elbow inside and make a frame against Xande's side control, it is important to find the correct leverage to open the elbow back up. The motion his opponent's arm will be weakest is that of an Americana, so Xande forces the arm in that direction, which will automatically create space between the elbow and body, allowing Xande to regain side control.Add to Favorites 648 Remove From Favorites 1321 days ago
One of the main things Xande is aware of while in side control is his opponent's effort to create a diamond defense, by bringing his elbow and knee together. Xande goes over how his opponent will look to do this, and how Xande can transition between his landmark positions to continuously prevent the elbow and knee from connecting.Add to Favorites 603 Remove From Favorites 1322 days ago
Now Xande covers how he uses side control with his hips facing his opponent's legs, rather than his head. Many times he'll switch to this side control when his opponent is framing on his neck, or he gets there straight from passing the half guard. After working his hips up high, under his opponent's armpit, he controls the legs with his free hand and steps his leg over to mount.Add to Favorites 594 Remove From Favorites 1323 days ago
Xande goes over a common situation where his opponent has his forearm framing against Xande's hip. He shows a couple simple ways to deal with this by switching back and forth between his landmark positions.Add to Favorites 654 Remove From Favorites 1324 days ago
Xande goes over some details on how to mount from side control and not get your leg stuck in the half guard. He uses his elbow in the super hold to open his opponent's arm up high, and his knee slides across the body in a downward direction. When he brings his foot over, he smacks it on the ground hard and fast and he settles into his mount position.Add to Favorites 522 Remove From Favorites 1325 days ago
Xande has side control and uses his hips to work his way to a high neutral side control, trapping his opponent's arm up near his head. He gets a superhold for more control, and then he can begin to slide his knee across the belly and slam his leg down to take the mount.Add to Favorites 608 Remove From Favorites 1328 days ago
Now covering another specific detail to be aware of while transitioning from landmark two to neutral side control, Xande shows how he controls his opponent's head. With his hand in the collar, once his opponent starts to turn into him, Xande uses his forearm across the face and drives him back as he pushes back with his hip. Now when he goes neutral, this grip allows him to set up several attacks.Add to Favorites 681 Remove From Favorites 1329 days ago
Xande breaks down his movement from his landmark position two to neutral side control, and shows how he always keeps his hip connected to his opponent's hip through the whole motion. This is much different than the sitting up into base movement, where he creates space between the hip for him to come up.
