To start off the class, Mario teaches a variation of the toreando guard pass to warm up with. His opponent sits in attempt to establish a guard, so Mario immediately blocks her hip with his hand, keeping his elbow inside her leg. His other goes on top of her other knee. Keeping his legs away from her, he pushes her knee to the side, causing her to spin, and he lowers his weight to gain side control. He gets up and repeats to make this a fast and dynamic warm up drill.

When his opponent's guard opens, he will most likely choose an ankle to grab and look to make a De La Riva hook or play another open guard. Xande immediately drives his knee to the ground, going shin across shin, makes the cross face grip and back steps out of the guard to establish side control.

From here, he puts his outside foot on the hip and extends his legs to sweep his opponent back, landing with one of his opponent's legs pinned on the mat and the other on his shoulder. Next, he brings his knee up on the side his opponent is trying to sweep him to, and slides his shin over the thigh. He reaches in to cross face, and his other arm hugs tight against the back. From here, Rafael chooses to lift his hips so he can use his inside leg to knee cut pass to side control.

Xande breaks down his guard pass from a fight that his opponent pulled half guard. Once his opponent pulls, Xande immediately places his hand on the chest and extends his arm to keep a lot of pressure on him. His other hand makes a grip on the sleeve, and he steps himself back so he can knee cut across his opponent's shin. It's important that he gets low enough and points his knee back, rather than doing a traditional knee cut across the thigh. Once he breaks through the legs, he drops his weight on his opponent's hips, and works his way to side control.
