Xande points out a key detail of not angling your hip too much when in the over-under. While staying on his toes and keeping pressure with his shoulder, he turns his hips just enough so his thigh can block his opponent's leg. He does not want to turn so much that he eases his pressure or gets himself off balance.

As his opponent turns and looks to block Xande, he lowers his level, brings his elbow inside, shrugs his shoulder to his head and dives in with his head hitting the thigh. He reaches under to grab the belt and drops his shoulder and head into position. After establishing his over-under position, he can pass either way that he's shown.

Xande's opponent is playing a knee shield guard and blocking his shoulder, so Xande's first step is to grip the belt and the pants. Xande pushes the knee in causing the reaction of his opponent to open his knee, giving Xande space to roll his arm to the inside with his shoulder inside the knee and he reaches under to grab the belt. After getting on his toes, he turns his head toward his hand and drops his shoulder on the stomach. From here he shows two options to pass by either stepping his leg over or windshield wiping his leg over.

He grabs the pants at the hip and places his shoulder outside the knee, so he can use it to drop his weight and smash the legs. Now he is back to the side smash position and has the same passing options as before.

Tyrone steps back and grabs the belt with his hand that was gripping the knee. He steps his trapped leg to the side and sprawls on his opponent's legs. He grabs the sleeve and drives his inside leg forward some more, and now has the option to step back and pass to the side or go straight to mount.

Xande points out the importance of applying constant pressure while using the side smash pass. First of all, he doesn't let his arm get stuck between his body and his legs, because doing so would mean he has to release pressure to get his arm out. Also, he always makes sure his head is low, and in turn his chest will be heavy on his opponent.

Xande has set up his base position on top, sitting on his opponent's hooks with his elbows inside the knees. This time his opponent tries to push him away with the hooks, so Xande straightens his legs and raises his hips to absorb the push. Now his elbow has come to the outside, so he can push the legs and get to the side smash. This time instead of mounting, he grips the bottom leg, shoves the top leg with his knee, then steps back and replaces his knee with his other knee, setting in a leg drag position.

Covering several possibilities you could encounter while trying to pass the open guard, Saulo shows some different reactions you should train yourself for. If his opponent sits up with his feet on the ground, he doesn't worry about the legs, but just controls the shoulder. When he does engage the legs, Saulo will either knee slice to the inside, or sprawl and smash to the outside.
