Now Saulo discusses the importance of defending right away, as oppose to taking your time and allowing your opponent to impose his offense. As soon as his opponent starts to open his guard, he immediately shrimps and begins his counter attack.Add to Favorites 662 Remove From Favorites 1928 days ago
Now on bottom, Saulo shows how to react when your opponent opens your closed guard. When his opponent pushes on his knee, Saulo immediately reaches and makes a cross grip on the sleeve, his other hand grips the triceps and his foot goes on the hip. Here Saulo stresses the importance of walking to the side after establishing your base, in order to create the angle you need to force your opponent to open his guard. Once he has his angle, he pushes his hips back to force the feet to uncross, so he can begin to pass.Add to Favorites 723 Remove From Favorites 1932 days ago
To begin the lesson, Saulo first goes over opening the closed guard. Keeping his base low, he shifts over to one side and then stands, but still keeping a low base. He pushes the knee to open the guard and then immediately passes to that side.Add to Favorites 693 Remove From Favorites 1933 days ago

Now from the knee on body position, Rafael makes a thumb-in collar grip and drops his hips to the outside before sliding across to a three quarter mount. From here, even with his elbow on the mat, it's difficult to finish the choke with his one hand, so he grabs the head and pulls it toward the grip to finish the choke.Add to Favorites 595 Remove From Favorites 1936 days ago
Rafael shows another passing sequence variation from the shin staple, but this time after he gets a nearside underhook, which is his preferred way to use this guard passing system. This time from his knee on body position, Rafael uses his shin staple, which is his shin across his opponent's thigh, pinning it to the mat. He gets his cross face and underhook to control the upper body next. From here, Rafael has a few different ways to pass the guard to side control or mount, depending on his opponent's reaction.Add to Favorites 675 Remove From Favorites 1940 days ago
After polishing up some details of the side smash pass to the mount, Rafael shows another variation when his opponent turns on his side when you smash the legs. Since he can't get a cross face and underhook now, he lowers his head to the chest to push his opponent flat as he steps around to the back side to pass to side control.Add to Favorites 698 Remove From Favorites 1941 days ago
From the half guard, Rafael gets to his knee on body position and makes his grips. This time his opponent pushes him away from the direction he is looking to knee slice, so Rafael turns his body and brings his knee between the legs, smashing both legs now. From here he looks to get the cross face and underhook before inching his way to the mount.Add to Favorites 698 Remove From Favorites 1942 days ago
After slicing his knee through to pass the guard, Rafael allows his opponent to turn to his side. He keeps his forearm to the chest and drops his shoulder on his body to keep pressure. His free hand reaches down the back to grab the belt, and with these grips, he drops his hip to the mat and steps his leg over, almost to mount. He can squeeze here and finish the choke, similar to a loop choke and a guillotine.
