Ricardo De la Riva teaches how to use the shin to shin and half spider guard when your opponent has his leg positioned in a way to make it impossible for you to establish the de la rivva hook. We use our opponents shin and our half spider grip to create leverage to topple our opponent's balance and depending on their reaction we can either finish the sweep or shoot for a triangle submission.

Rico recalls the techniques that helped him win his 2 brown belt world titles. He explains that as your opponent gets more advanced, they will often break a grip and not let you control both sleeves to play a traditional spider guard. In this case, use the cross lapel and work a modified classic open guard to attack with the triangle, omoplata, or the tripod sweep.Add to Favorites 1673 Remove From Favorites 3965 days ago
Rico teaches his favorite combinations that he used to win many of his matches to become the purple belt world champ. Rico began to encounter people who would sit back on their knees to keep their hips low to the ground. As it is very difficult to get underneath your opponent when they are on their knees, he began using the scissor sweep and omoplata combination to attack his opponents from the spider guard. The strength of this combination comes from the action reaction principle of jiu jitsu. If your opponent leans back, sweep them with the scissor guard. As they push forward to defend against the sweep, transition into the omoplata, using your opponent's momentum against them to strengthen your next attack.Add to Favorites 2120 Remove From Favorites 3966 days ago
Rico recalls his favorite sweeps and submission that he used as a blue belt to win the world championships. He explains that he used a lot of de la riva and spider guard at the blue belt level because a lot of blue belts haven't developed the base to neutralize these guards. He used the de la riva helicopter sweep and the spider guard to triangle or reverse tripod sweep a lot of his opponents and used the triangle technique shown here to win his first world title at blue belt.Add to Favorites 1751 Remove From Favorites 4070 days ago

The half spider guard is mostly a transitional position as there aren't any direct sweeps from the half spider position itself. We can use the half spider guard to transition from spider guard into x guard, curu curu guard, or a single leg to finish with a sweep. The position has become more popular in the modern competition scene with people like Leandro Lo using it effectively in competitions against the best in the world. Check out the Leandro Lo seminar in the curriculum section for more half spider guard transitions to sweeps.Add to Favorites 698 Remove From Favorites 4098 days ago
Xande teaches the classic spider guard sweep off of your opponent's pass. In this sweep, we use our opponent's pass attempt against them by rotating our hips to generate enough force to sweep our opponent as if they were attached to the end of a pendulum. Be sure to post your other foot on the ground to be able to generate the extra force to ensure a successful sweep.Add to Favorites 892 Remove From Favorites 4099 days ago
Xande teaches how to control your opponent in the spider guard using the side to side drill to mobilize your hips and keep your opponent stretched out. From the side to side drill we learn how to set up the spider guard scissor sweep that goes hand in hand with the drill as you utilize a continuous movement that uses the momentum from the side to side drill to scissor sweep your opponent.Add to Favorites 1886 Remove From Favorites 4130 days ago
In this lesson, we learn the spinning inverted omoplata or spinning inverted triangle from the spider guard lasso control. Clark has been using the spider guard lasso control since he was a blue belt. In this lesson, he demonstrates how he uses the lasso control to manipulate his opponent and sweep them with the "spider guard classic sweep with lasso control" or simply "lasso control classic sweep". This sweep is very similar to, and a variation of, the "Classic Spider Guard Sweep" or " JJU 19-03 Sweep Off a Pass" as seen in the JJU book.Add to Favorites 889 Remove From Favorites 4187 days ago
