Roberto "Gordo" Correa is a two-time black belt world champion (1996 & 1997) and is credited for being the creator of the half guard as an offensive position. In this video we follow Gordo's story on how he discovered the half guard and learn that he began using the half guard due to a serious injury to his right knee. He used the half guard to protect his injured leg and was the first to begin exploring options to fight from the half guard rather than trying to recover full guard.

Xande goes into the details on what to look for to retain your guard and mentions that you want to keep your opponent off your three points of control (neck, shoulders, hips) to stay mobile and capable of retaining your guard. We also take an advanced look into the knee cross pass, x pass, and same side knee pass and examine how lifting your foot off the mats can neutralize the strength of the De la Riva guard and allow you to remain loose and glide over your opponent into a passing opportunity.

Saulo teaches how to control your opponent in the half guard when they have the underhook and how to pass the half guard. By gripping the belt, we can neutralize our opponent's ability to get into the deep half and use our body positioning and weight to pin them to the floor. Depending on how your opponent reacts to the top pressure, you can either choose the double move pass or the shotgun pass. The double move pass is all about heavy pressure and is Saulo's favorite way to pass the half guard.

Xande talks about how his guard has only been passed by two people in two decades of jiu jitsu competition and how being able to frame and always stay safe will allow you to build up to an impassable guard. In this lesson we learn how to set the frame and use it to create the space and mobility needed to recover your guard. We learn that after setting the frame and/or shield on our opponent, we can greatly increase our mobility by using our other arm to frame against the ground with our elbow or hand for maximum mobility.
