Rico explains how to control the distance and attack your opponent from the z guard or half guard knee shield position with the rollover sweep or omoplata. Afterwards he explains that he switches between the knee shield, spider guard, butterfly guard, and classic open depending on the distance as well as whether his opponent is standing or on their knees. If your opponent is on both knees, a half spider or butterfly guard may make more sense while a classic open, spider guard, or de la riva guard will work more effectively against a standing opponent.

Gordo teaches how to defend against and counter the knee cross pass from the half guard position. It's important to not let your opponent dominate the inside arm and we establish a grip either on the knee or on the lapel to prevent them from lifting the arm up to flatten your body. Once in position, bump your opponent up with your knee to destabilize their base and either go for their back or roll over for the plan b sweep.Add to Favorites 2295 Remove From Favorites 3999 days ago
You can catch the kimura from the half guard position but it's important to attack the arm with a strong hip bump to make the submission harder to defend. Going light on the hip bump will allow your opponent to pull their arm out before you can finish the submission.Add to Favorites 3075 Remove From Favorites 4000 days ago
We continue our half guard attacks with the plan b rollover sweep. This sweep is effective in combination with the classic back take. If they whizzer your arm to defend against the back take, immediately switch to the plan b rollover sweep and take them to the opposite side for the sweep.Add to Favorites 2916 Remove From Favorites 4000 days ago
Gordo begins the seminar with the classic back take from the half guard. Gordo explains that the classic back take is like your jab from the half guard and that looking to take your opponent's back in combination with other sweeps will open up better opportunities to sweep them.Add to Favorites 2101 Remove From Favorites 4002 days ago
Roberto "Gordo" Correa is a two-time black belt world champion (1996 & 1997) and is credited for being the creator of the half guard as an offensive position. In this video we follow Gordo's story on how he discovered the half guard and learn that he began using the half guard due to a serious injury to his right knee. He used the half guard to protect his injured leg and was the first to begin exploring options to fight from the half guard rather than trying to recover full guard.Add to Favorites 1555 Remove From Favorites 4006 days ago

Xande goes into the details on what to look for to retain your guard and mentions that you want to keep your opponent off your three points of control (neck, shoulders, hips) to stay mobile and capable of retaining your guard. We also take an advanced look into the knee cross pass, x pass, and same side knee pass and examine how lifting your foot off the mats can neutralize the strength of the De la Riva guard and allow you to remain loose and glide over your opponent into a passing opportunity.Add to Favorites 1852 Remove From Favorites 4037 days ago

Saulo teaches how to control your opponent in the half guard when they have the underhook and how to pass the half guard. By gripping the belt, we can neutralize our opponent's ability to get into the deep half and use our body positioning and weight to pin them to the floor. Depending on how your opponent reacts to the top pressure, you can either choose the double move pass or the shotgun pass. The double move pass is all about heavy pressure and is Saulo's favorite way to pass the half guard.Add to Favorites 2004 Remove From Favorites 4080 days ago
