Summing up the lesson, Nick talks about a doing proper knee cut pass which would be avoiding the knee shield all together. That should be the ultimate goal, but obviously won't always happen, which is when sprawling on the knee to pass comes into play.

Nick watches students work the pass and corrects key details to the sprawl. The big point is to anticipate when your opponent will be trying to replace the half guard and sprawling on his leg to smash him.Add to Favorites 560 Remove From Favorites 1439 days ago
In this scenario, Nick is working his knee cut pass but his opponent has a good knee shield in blocking him from passing. Rather than trying to fight through it, Nick sprawls and drops his weight to smash the knee. His opponent reacts by straightening his leg in effort to replace half guard, so Nick times it and sprawls again to get away from the leg. Now he can work his way to the side and pass.Add to Favorites 461 Remove From Favorites 1491 days ago
This time Gustavo's opponent is playing a high knee shield guard with his knee up at Gustavo's chest, making it difficult to smash as he did before. In this case he puts his knee through the legs, controls the belt and brings his hips up high so can bend down and get his torso over the knee. Now he looks to smash and finish his pass by bringing his knee through.Add to Favorites 466 Remove From Favorites 1492 days ago
Now Professor Gustavo shows a couple ways how he can use his free hand to control the upper body while he is passing the knee shield. One way is to make a collar grip and pull his opponent in so his torso is curled and he can't stretch himself away from you. Another way is to grab his opponent's wrist and pin it to the mat.Add to Favorites 485 Remove From Favorites 1495 days ago
In this lesson Professor Gustavo goes over some half guard passing, beginning with his opponent playing the knee shield. His first objective is to put pressure on his opponent and smash his legs together. He controls the belt with a tight elbow to the body and drives his head underneath the chine. Now Professor Nick goes over his knee shield guard pass. His first step is to smash his opponent's knees together by dropping the weight of his chest on them. Now he hooks the top foot with his arm and pins it against against the butt by grabbing the belt. From here Nick gets on his toes and works his way over to side control, always keeping his weight heavy.Add to Favorites 524 Remove From Favorites 1499 days ago
In this scenario, Nick's opponent is in half guard and is on his side with a good underhook. Instead of trying to battle for the pummel, Nick slides his outside arm between his opponent's arm and body, and switches his hips to flatten him with his side. Now he grabs his opponent's pants at the knee and can start working to free his leg and pass.Add to Favorites 514 Remove From Favorites 1502 days ago
Professor Nick Schrock begins this half guard lesson with a basic knee cut pass. His first objective is to flatten his opponent, establish head and underhook control with a Gable grip and apply heavy pressure with his shoulder. He uses his free leg to hook his opponent's leg and help free his knee from the half guard, until he is able to cut it to the outside and work his guard pass.Add to Favorites 545 Remove From Favorites 1516 days ago

Having taken Roger down and establishing half guard, Xande discusses using the cross face vs. the nearside underhook against Roger, or someone taller and bigger than him in general. In many cases, the cross face would be preferred, but because of Roger's size, he was able to sweep Xande even while cross faced. Xande shows how could have used the nearside underhook to his advantage in this situation.
