Xande is in the half guard and now his opponent switches his base toward him and controls his arm over the top. His first step is to cup the shoulder with his arm across his opponent's neck. Xande doesn't worry about closing his leg, but instead uses his knee to control his opponent's hip, and he moves side to side until he can get his elbow to the other hip. Now he can use his frames to bump his opponent, create space and replace his guard.

Xande shows an escape from a common half guard position when your opponent switches his base toward you and puts heavy shoulder pressure on your face. Xande's first step is to push the shoulder, turn his face into it and escape his hips inch by inch, until the crown of his head is in his opponent's biceps. Now he can create the space to put in his shields and replace the guard.Add to Favorites 1721 Remove From Favorites 3245 days ago
Xande starts in his half guard with his opponent controlling his head and holding the underhook. Xande first gets his elbow in his opponent's hip and uses the leverage to shimmy away. Next he bumps with his hips to create space for his knee. Now he can take his time and use the leverage to replace the full guard.Add to Favorites 845 Remove From Favorites 3468 days ago
Saulo discusses Xande's final match against Lucas Leite at the 2015 World Championship, and shows how Xande was able to roll away from Lucas' reverse half guard after he pulled his leg out in order to pass Xande's guard. This was a better option for Xande, since he felt more comfortable to defend his back rather than defending the guard pass.Add to Favorites 2251 Remove From Favorites 3996 days ago
Xande goes into the details on what to look for to retain your guard and mentions that you want to keep your opponent off your three points of control (neck, shoulders, hips) to stay mobile and capable of retaining your guard. We also take an advanced look into the knee cross pass, x pass, and same side knee pass and examine how lifting your foot off the mats can neutralize the strength of the De la Riva guard and allow you to remain loose and glide over your opponent into a passing opportunity.Add to Favorites 2004 Remove From Favorites 4067 days ago

Xande talks about how his guard has only been passed by two people in two decades of jiu jitsu competition and how being able to frame and always stay safe will allow you to build up to an impassable guard. In this lesson we learn how to set the frame and use it to create the space and mobility needed to recover your guard. We learn that after setting the frame and/or shield on our opponent, we can greatly increase our mobility by using our other arm to frame against the ground with our elbow or hand for maximum mobility.Add to Favorites 1024 Remove From Favorites 4230 days ago
Xande explains how to defend against and escape when your opponent gets the esgrima underhook or tries to pin you with an overhook from the half guard. The major concept of the escape is to set up your defensive frame with your arm and shrimp your hips to the side before your opponent can settle into a good offensive position.Add to Favorites 1403 Remove From Favorites 4324 days ago
