A nice trick Xande uses from side control is to grab his opponent's belt at the far hip and use is as a fulcrum to pressure his forearm across the waist. From here he can also transition to a knee on belly for even more pressure.

Xande goes over some different ways to control your opponent's arm from side control. First is by using your hip in his armpit to force his arm down like an Americana. He also shows how to pass the arm all together and control from more of a north south position, and some possible arm lock setups.Add to Favorites 554 Remove From Favorites 1201 days ago
Xande answers Alex's question on where to focus his weight to control his opponent when reversing side control. When in normal side control, he is focused on controlling the chest to the hips, but when he reverses, his focus switches on controlling the chest to shoulders.Add to Favorites 512 Remove From Favorites 1209 days ago
In pose two Xande is on his hip and his legs are opposite as they were in pose one, so his top leg is in front this time. Pose two is great for applying pressure from the top, especially side control.Add to Favorites 541 Remove From Favorites 1210 days ago
Xande goes into detail on pose one, which is when he is on one hip with his bottom foot in front and his top foot posted in back. This is the primary pose for any defensive position. This pose can also be used from a top position, but should be more of a transitional position rather than one of control.Add to Favorites 532 Remove From Favorites 1211 days ago
Xande explains what pose zero is and how he applies it to his Jiu Jitsu. It is a neutral position which he can use to control his opponent from top or bottom, most commonly in side control or closed guard.Add to Favorites 545 Remove From Favorites 1261 days ago
In this scenario, Xande is in side control pose zero, his opponent hip escapes so Xande switches to pose two, and now his opponent is able to slide his knee under. From here Xande brings his bottom thigh past the knee and walks it back to a point his can switch back to pose zero, always keeping pressure on his opponent. This may be a continuous battle.Add to Favorites 594 Remove From Favorites 1264 days ago
Xande covers how to maintain side control using Pose Zero, which is the neutral position with both knees on the ground, and Pose Two, which is hips facing opponent's head and top leg in front. From Pose Zero, his opponent hip escapes, so Xande switches to Pose Two, and now maintains control by always keeping his hip attached to his opponent's hip.Add to Favorites 551 Remove From Favorites 1337 days ago
Now Xande goes over exactly how he breaks his opponent's frame on his hip from side control. First he walks the arm up high near the head, and by switching his hips he can use just his legs to control and trap the arm, allowing him to then control the legs and advance to mount.Add to Favorites 540 Remove From Favorites 1338 days ago
If Xande's opponent is able to sneak his elbow inside and make a frame against Xande's side control, it is important to find the correct leverage to open the elbow back up. The motion his opponent's arm will be weakest is that of an Americana, so Xande forces the arm in that direction, which will automatically create space between the elbow and body, allowing Xande to regain side control.Add to Favorites 648 Remove From Favorites 1341 days ago
One of the main things Xande is aware of while in side control is his opponent's effort to create a diamond defense, by bringing his elbow and knee together. Xande goes over how his opponent will look to do this, and how Xande can transition between his landmark positions to continuously prevent the elbow and knee from connecting.Add to Favorites 603 Remove From Favorites 1342 days ago
Now Xande covers how he uses side control with his hips facing his opponent's legs, rather than his head. Many times he'll switch to this side control when his opponent is framing on his neck, or he gets there straight from passing the half guard. After working his hips up high, under his opponent's armpit, he controls the legs with his free hand and steps his leg over to mount.
