To start off the class, Mario teaches a variation of the toreando guard pass to warm up with. His opponent sits in attempt to establish a guard, so Mario immediately blocks her hip with his hand, keeping his elbow inside her leg. His other goes on top of her other knee. Keeping his legs away from her, he pushes her knee to the side, causing her to spin, and he lowers his weight to gain side control. He gets up and repeats to make this a fast and dynamic warm up drill.

As his opponent is falling back, Xande switches his hips and shuffles to the other side with his underhook grabbing the back. When his opponent tries to use his hook, Xande breaks his hips to clear it, and can now work to pass or force the half guard.
