Saulo is caught in Xande's triangle, so his first thing is to not panic and to not let his head move forward, toward Xande's body. Next he throws his inside arm across Xande's body, framing with his elbow, and steps his leg up to place his knee on Xande's body. Now he has angled himself in a way it is hard for Xande to attack. From here, he can take his time and inch his way back until the legs are forced open and he can escape, immediately looking to pass the guard.Add to Favorites 866 Remove From Favorites 2556 days ago
After continually getting cross faced and dealing with heavy shoulder pressure, Xande began to train with his hand on his head and his forearm protecting his face. Now when Saulo goes to cross face, Xande is able to block it and focus on replacing his guard. This is a great drill to practice or use in live training.Add to Favorites 1094 Remove From Favorites 2557 days ago
In this seminar, Saulo and Xande take turns teaching how to stop each other's game. First up is Saulo with his method of dealing with Xande's dangerous closed guard. He begins by grabbing both lapels and pulling Xande to him a little, just before he jumps to his feet and establishes a strong base, trapping Xande's legs with his elbows and thighs. When Xande goes to adjust his position, Saulo pushes down and steps back a little and to the side as much as he can, forcing the legs open. Now he pushes down on the legs and begins his passing.Add to Favorites 968 Remove From Favorites 2558 days ago
Again from side control, this time Xande's opponent switches his base right away, turning his hips toward Xande's head. Xande keeps with the idea of using his forearm to create a belt on his opponent's waist, with his hand on the hip and elbow on the mat. While pushing off with his frames, Xande can scoot his feet away to create the space he needs to turn to his hip and sneak his knee in under his opponent's hips. Now he can work to shimmy leg through to replace the guard.Add to Favorites 907 Remove From Favorites 2559 days ago
Xande's opponent has side control, so again Xande is making his frames with his forearms, and his bottom arm is staying across the waist like a belt. As Xande escapes his hips to try to replace guard, his opponent reacts by turning his hips toward Xande and trying to stay in a side control position. This gives Xande just enough time and space to slide his knee in and connect it to his elbow. Now both his forearm and knee are working together to block his opponent from reestablishing a strong side control, and eventually Xande can create the space to bring his leg all the way through and replace his guard.Add to Favorites 927 Remove From Favorites 2560 days ago
Xande breaks down how important using his feet to escape is in both placing himself in the right position to throw his opponent's weight, as well as using fast and small steps to help shimmy his way back to the guard.Add to Favorites 1035 Remove From Favorites 2562 days ago
Xande's opponent has side control, so his first step is to make frames with his forearms against the neck and hips. Next he does two little hips escapes, first pushing off his inside foot and then his outside foot, creating space to bring his knee and shin inside against the hips. Now he can push off his frames to move his shoulder away, before bring his knee to the other side of his opponent's body. His final hip escape comes from pushing his inside foot off the floor and his shin off the hips to extend his body, giving him the space to bring his leg all the way through to close his guard.Add to Favorites 756 Remove From Favorites 2563 days ago
Claudia now has her partner give some resistance as she applies the techniques she has taught in this series, giving a demonstration of how they work in a practical sparring situation.Add to Favorites 727 Remove From Favorites 2564 days ago
Again because of her shoulder injury, Claudia is unable to cross face and put a heavy shoulder on her opponent from side control, so instead, she traps her opponent's hips between her knee and her elbow. She reaches across the neck to grab the collar with her thumb in, and when her opponent turns in to try to replace guard, Claudia jumps up to knee on belly. After establishing her position, she slides her knee all the way across to gain the mount.Add to Favorites 784 Remove From Favorites 2565 days ago
Claudia is on top in her opponent's half guard, and because of her shoulder injury, she could not put a heavy cross face on her opponent. Instead she switches her base so that her hips are facing her opponent, and she traps the hips with her knee and forearm. If her opponent leaves her arm over Claudia's arm, Claudia raises her elbow up to the armpit, then swims her arm through and across the neck, where she can wrap it around the head and attack the Kata Gatame. If her opponent swims her arm under Claudia's arm, Claudia traps it with her elbow and grabs the wrist. From here, she can either attack the wrist lock, or make a Kimura grip and straighten the arm to submit with an arm lock.Add to Favorites 683 Remove From Favorites 2566 days ago
Because of a knee injury, Claudia had to adjust her spider guard game, so she started her attacks from the closed guard instead. She controls one side with both a sleeve grip and cross collar grip, and brings her knee behind her opponent's shoulder. The common reaction by her opponent is to push down on her other knee in an attempt to pass the guard, so Claudia uses the space to bring her foot inside the arm and push it away at the shoulder. Now she can pull her grips and throw her leg over the shoulder for the omoplata. If her opponent defends the omoplata by posturing up, Claudia can easily switch to the triangle.
