To begin this lesson on passing the guard, Xande teaches the basics of the crab stance. He begins by placing both hands on his opponent's stomach, standing up and pushing the knee to open the guard. Once the guard is open, Xande widens his stance so his knees are behind his opponent's knees, and he squats to find his base. His elbows are on the outside of his own knees, and his hands cup his opponent's thighs. Now from this crab stance, when his opponent moves, Xande moves with him, always keeping these points of connection in tact.

Yan "Pica-Pau" Lucas, who won third place in the Black Belt Lightweight Division at the 2017 World Championship, shows a sweep he used from the De La Riva guard. While hugging his own thigh to help trap the leg, he pulls out his opponent's far lapel and steps on it. His opponent reacts by stuffing the foot, so Yan sits up to S-position and feeds the lapel to his other hand through the legs. Now he pivots and lays down to Reverse De La Riva. He brings his free leg in to shin on shin, grabs the sleeve, and pushes his opponent away with his shin. His opponent tries to defend by standing up, so Yan stands with him, and finishes the single leg takedown.Add to Favorites 847 Remove From Favorites 2749 days ago
Xande is standing up with his opponent and gets the classic collar and triceps grips. He pushes his opponent a little to get the push back reaction from him, and he uses the opportunity to step to the side of the collar grip and pull guard. As he pulls, he hooks his foot behind the knee to elevate his opponent, and his other foot scissors at the ankle to sweep him. The key to this position is making sure he steps aside to pull his guard at an angle, rather than straight on.Add to Favorites 944 Remove From Favorites 2754 days ago
From the De La Riva guard, Mario is the pants and the same side collar, and his free foot is hooking behind the far knee. He circles his De La Riva hook to the inside of the leg and hooks at her hip with his knee outside her knee. He pulls and uses his hooks to bring her to the side and force her to post her hands. Now he lets go of the collar and grabs her triceps, and when she attempts to stand back up, he lifts her off the mat with his hooks. He pushes her leg away, and attacks her back, immediately getting the seat belt grip, and opens her up to place his second hook.Add to Favorites 1005 Remove From Favorites 2755 days ago
Mario has a cross collar and sleeve grip from the De La Riva guard, and his free foot is in his opponent's biceps, controlling the arm. He moves his foot from the biceps to the hip, sits up, and pulls his opponent up off her feet as he rocks back. Now he spins her toward the De La Riva hook, and as she is spinning, he releases the hook and throws it over her head, setting up the armbar as she lands on the mat perpendicular to him.Add to Favorites 983 Remove From Favorites 2756 days ago
Mario is playing open guard with his opponent standing, and her front leg is in between both of Mario's legs. While controlling the collar and ankle, he pulls her in with the help of his legs, and when she steps back, he arches on his shoulder and stretches his legs to sink the deep De Le Riva hook. His other foot goes behind the far knee to make an X-hook, and he makes a sleeve grip. Now he pulls her in and knocks her back to the mat, and rolls til he is on his other side. He grabs the pants and releases his deep De La Riva hook to set up his first back take hook. Now using his free leg, he forces his opponent to roll, exposing her back so he can get the second hook.Add to Favorites 1116 Remove From Favorites 2758 days ago
Again, Mario's opponent stands up while he has sleeve control, so he pushes off her shin to put his hip on her knee, and reaches inside the near leg. He uses his hips to bump her down with the muscle sweep. His opponent reacts by coming back to the top, and as she does, Mario throws his leg over her shoulder and locks the triangle. Now he grabs his shin to finish the choke, or he has the option for the armbar.Add to Favorites 1081 Remove From Favorites 2759 days ago
Mario is controlling his opponent's same side sleeve from the closed guard, and she stands up, looking to pass. With his other hand, he pushes off her shin to move to the side, and then swims his arm all the way across to the outside of her other leg. Using his hip and his arm, he sweeps her to the mat. He opens his leg to on the side he's controlling the sleeve, escapes his hips, and is now in position to finish the armbar.Add to Favorites 1255 Remove From Favorites 2760 days ago
From the closed guard, Mario controls his opponent with a cross collar and triceps grips, and pulls her down with the help of his legs. He reaches over the back and grabs the belt to keep her down, puts his foot on her hip and turns on his side. His hand on the belt now comes behind her neck, and under his other arm. Now he stretches his arms and opens his elbow to finish the choke.Add to Favorites 1084 Remove From Favorites 2761 days ago
From inside his closed guard, Mario's opponent is controlling his collar and his hip, so he turns to the side of the hip control, and sits up. He posts his hand on the mat and reaches over her back and grabs the belt, trapping her arm in between their bodies. He lays back down on the mat, bringing her down with him, and places his foot on her hip on the same side as the belt grip. His other hand swims under her arm and controls her biceps. He brings his knee up so his shin is on the biceps, and he stretches his body to break her grip on him. Now he controls her wrist and pushes it so he can bring his leg over her head to lock the triangle. To finish, he prefers to keep his hand on his shin and swim his other arm under her leg to turn himself and tighten the triangle.Add to Favorites 1030 Remove From Favorites 2762 days ago
From the closed guard, Mario makes a cross collar grip to control his opponent's posture and threaten her neck, and his other arm reaches across to control her arm at the elbow. He very quickly puts his foot on the him and climbs his guard, trapping her arm in his legs. When he throws his leg over her head, she stands up to try to defend. He lets go of the collar and reaches across the arm, and cups his own thigh, keeping the arm trapped. Now he reaches underneath to the far leg, and spins himself under his opponent, forcing her to roll and landing in the armbar.Add to Favorites 1152 Remove From Favorites 2763 days ago
From the closed guard, Mario opens his opponent's lapel as he did before, and his other hands slides deep in the collar to set up his first choking grip. Rather than wrapping the lapel around the arm, he wraps it around the back of her neck, and closes his elbows together and pulls her down to his body to finish the choke.
