Again because of her shoulder injury, Claudia is unable to cross face and put a heavy shoulder on her opponent from side control, so instead, she traps her opponent's hips between her knee and her elbow. She reaches across the neck to grab the collar with her thumb in, and when her opponent turns in to try to replace guard, Claudia jumps up to knee on belly. After establishing her position, she slides her knee all the way across to gain the mount.

Claudia is on top in her opponent's half guard, and because of her shoulder injury, she could not put a heavy cross face on her opponent. Instead she switches her base so that her hips are facing her opponent, and she traps the hips with her knee and forearm. If her opponent leaves her arm over Claudia's arm, Claudia raises her elbow up to the armpit, then swims her arm through and across the neck, where she can wrap it around the head and attack the Kata Gatame. If her opponent swims her arm under Claudia's arm, Claudia traps it with her elbow and grabs the wrist. From here, she can either attack the wrist lock, or make a Kimura grip and straighten the arm to submit with an arm lock.

Because of a knee injury, Claudia had to adjust her spider guard game, so she started her attacks from the closed guard instead. She controls one side with both a sleeve grip and cross collar grip, and brings her knee behind her opponent's shoulder. The common reaction by her opponent is to push down on her other knee in an attempt to pass the guard, so Claudia uses the space to bring her foot inside the arm and push it away at the shoulder. Now she can pull her grips and throw her leg over the shoulder for the omoplata. If her opponent defends the omoplata by posturing up, Claudia can easily switch to the triangle.

Now Claudia shows a great drill she practices to get her body used to the motion of the sweep she taught in the previous technique. After setting up her spider guard with her foot in the biceps and her leg stretching the arm away from her, she swings her free leg to her opponent's leg. While swinging, her spider leg bends to load her opponent and then stretches again as her swinging leg hits her opponent's leg. Now she swings back to her original position and swings again, repeating the drill several times.

Claudia sets up her spider guard, placing her foot in the biceps and stretching her leg. For whatever reason, she is unable to get the triangle or omoplata, so she opens her free leg wide and swings it low at her opponent's knee. As she swings, her spider leg bends and her hips switch to face the outside. As her swinging leg chops at the knee, Claudia stretches her spider leg again, knocking her opponent over and coming to the top to finish the sweep.

Claudia sets up her spider guard, first placing her foot in the biceps and stretching her leg, and bringing her other foot to the hip. Her opponent's posture is already broken some, so she can easily raise her hips and throw her spider grip leg over the back of the neck and lock the triangle. For the omoplata, she brings her free leg thigh to the triceps, then throws the leg over the shoulder and across the face to lock the omoplata.

Claudia do Val is one of the top female competitors today, having won the World Championship at both brown and black belt. She begins her series by explaining her approach to playing spider guard. With both sleeves controlled, Claudia chooses a side and slides her foot into the biceps, and then stretches her leg. She turns her body so her hips are facing in that direction. When her opponent reacts, Claudia can slide her other foot in the other biceps, and then stretch that leg out. She drills this movement back and forth, and in a match, she can eventually confuse her opponent and take the opportunity to set up a sweep or submission.
